Welcome to PiFORUM23

Piscopia Initiative – Female and Other Researchers United in Mathematics

Date – Thursday 7th September 2023

This event has ended!

Check out the blog to read about how PiFORUM23 went!

The Piscopia Initiative are planning our third PiFORUM event, to be hosted this September at the University of Birmingham. After the success of our previous events both online and Edinburgh, we hope that this year we can see even more of our community in person and celebrate the research that is being done around the UK by women and non-binary researchers!

We are grateful to the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research for their funding towards this event, which will primarily be used to support travel for attendees. We also thank the EMS and LMS for their support in funding this event.

Important deadlines:

July 27th, ’23

Deadline for contributed talk and funding applications.

August 25th, ’23

Official schedule confirmed.

Aug 10th, ’23

Deadline for registering to attend.

Outcome of all funding applications will be communicated.

What will the day include?

Day Schedule:

  • This conference will be open to undergraduates and postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
  • We hope to have parallel sessions of contributed talks that are categorised by theme to maximise the number of speakers we can host and allowing attendees to choose the talks that are relevant to their own study and interests. There will also be a poster competition.
  • Prizes will be awarded for best talk and best poster! One prize will be decided by judges, and the other will be a “people’s choice” award (voted favourite by attendees).
  • With workshops and panel discussions focused on topics such as career paths, academic development and the challenges that women and non-binary researchers face in academia, we hope to give attendees the opportunity to gain advice on subjects beyond their own research. We also want to foster a safe space for women and non-binary students where they feel supported and encouraged.
  • We’d like to be as transparent as possible about how the event is run, from judging criteria for talks all the way to what to wear on the day. If you have any questions, then please do not hesitate to contact us via email or on our social media platforms!

Behind the Research

Behind the Research is an initiative developed and run by PhD students in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Bath. The aim of the initiative is to demystify the world of academia, showcasing the daily lives, the highs and lows of a research student, and the real people “Behind the Research”. Kat and Beth (Piscopia Committee Lead at Bath) are part of the Behind the Research team and will be conducting some filming at PiFORUM23, creating a video diary of their time at the conference and also making a short promotional video for the Piscopia Initiative. These will be used on their websites and social media and also by Piscopia.
