Kuniko (she/her)

Hi there! I’m Kuniko Paxton, a PhD student in the School of Computer Science. My research focuses on evaluating fairness and mitigating bias for multidimensional arrays of sensitive attributes using statistical distances. The relationship between maths and myself began when I was a master’s student. There was maths, maths, and maths in the textbooks and journal articles! Everywhere! Initially, I almost cried! Now, maths has become one of my good friends who supports me in understanding AI. I would like to share my journey!

Candice (she/her)

Hi! My name is Candice, and I’m currently in my first year at university studying Physics with Astrophysics. I’m deeply passionate about all things STEM, especially space.

Before university, I volunteered as a STEM ambassador at my college, where I engaged with prospective students during open events to encourage more people to join the department. I also collaborated with college teachers to run weekend computer science classes, helping younger students learn the basics of coding.

At university, I have recently been elected for the role of Outreach Representative for the Women in STEM society, where I will help to connect students with opportunities and events that celebrate diversity in science. I am also training to become a course representative for the physics department, so that I can advocate for my peers and make a difference.

I’m excited to continue building a career in STEM and hope to inspire others, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, to pursue their ambitions with confidence.

Ellis (she/her)

Hello! My name is Ellis, I’m studying a Physics Masters degree. I’ve been the President of the Physics Society here, for which I won the student union’s “Best Society President Award” in 2025. My efforts now involve restarting the Women in STEM society with other Piscopia members to promote inclusive science, campaigning with another student groups, and running an astrophysics society.

Bhoomi (she/her)

I’m Bhoomi Shah, a BSc student in Physics with Astrophysics. I was Student Ambassador for ONCAMPUS Hull, which has given me a great chance to connect with new students and share my own experiences. Outside of academics, I care deeply about giving back. Through Vidhya Daan, I’ve volunteered by offering free tutoring to economically disadvantaged students, helping them access education and build confidence in science. I’m also a Food Waste Hero with Olio, working to reduce food waste and support sustainability in my community. By studying physics — especially astrophysics — I’m excited to keep exploring the universe through science, and to keep making a difference both inside and outside the classroom.
