PiFORUM25 – Amplifying Hidden Voices

This event has now ended. Thank you to everyone who came along!

The Piscopia Initiative – a community for women and underrepresented genders in mathematics

Location: Queen Mary University of London, Mathematical Sciences Building

Date: Thursday 4th – Friday 5th September 2025

The Piscopia Initiative invites you to our 5th anniversary PiFORUM conference, hosted at Queen Mary University of London. This year’s theme is Amplifying Hidden Voices – we want to make sure everyone’s voices in the mathematical world are heard, including how to communicate maths well and hear stories from unconventional careers in maths.

We welcome everyone to attend including undergraduates, postgraduate students considering a PhD, PhD students, postdocs and early career researchers. It’s a great opportunity for anyone to gain experience presenting their research, be inspired by current PhD work, find out more about doing a PhD and life after a PhD! You can also expect fun social activities, a poster session, interactive workshops and prizes.

Registration is now closed.

We have a great schedule of events to look forward to this year (subject to minor changes!)

One of the our key events in this year’s lineup will be our Mini-Symposium on Math Career Journeys. We have invited Angela Tabiri (AIMS Ghana), Ayliean MacDonald (Maths Communicator) and Reem Yassawi (QMUL) to share where their maths degrees and research has taken them.

You can have a look at last year’s webpage to find out more about what PiFORUM is.

Testimonials from PiFORUM24 Attendees

“The event was very welcoming to students of all levels of study and areas of Maths. It was very nice to be able to get to know people in this setting, learn more about what a PhD involves and of course the talks were very interesting! The social events were the perfect opportunity to talk to people informally, especially as a younger attendee, this made it easier to get involved.”

“I was flagging a bit questioning the value of my role, but having been to PiFORUM I feel I have a valid role to play in helping early career maths practitioners become aware of the many opportunities open to them, career-wise. I feel reinvigorated – thank you!”

“The most comfortable I’ve felt at a conference. The community atmosphere was lovely! Everything was well organised with a really clear conference booklet. The prizes were very sweet, overall the whole event was brilliant :)”

“Attending PiFORUM made the idea of doing a PhD in Maths less daunting. It was very helpful to discuss things like imposter syndrome and to be able to relate to and get advice from other attendees!”
